HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHIROPRACTIC

DSC_0095

On September 18th, 1895 Daniel David Palmer provided the first specific chiropractic adjustment to the then partially deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard. Harvey Lillard then mentioned days later that he had noticed that his hearing had improved. Just like Harvey’s life changing event that September day, many lives have changed in the 120 years since. Even my life has been dramatically changed by chiropractic and it’s principles.

Here’s my story

I was first introduced to chiropractic as a college athlete after years of struggling with injuries. After trying multiple different treatments and seeing a mutlitude of healthcare providers I was finally introduced to Dr. Barry Gjerdrum. I quickly noticed its impact on my ability to train and perform. Soon after that, I also noticed I was sleeping better and was even able to stop taking my daily allergy medication. To this day I know that in order to function at my very best my nervous system must be as well. After a few conversations with Dr. Gjerdrum I realized I was called to be a chiropractor. Seven years after my first chiropractic adjustment I graduated from Life University as a Doctor of Chiropractic and I have seen hundreds of lives change in our own office since then. Everyday I get to come to “work” and help others see the power in their own body and lead them to a healthy fulfilling life. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else…

If you or somebody you know is struggling with health issues or simply looking to be as healthy as possible, call our office at 425-968-2262. Whether it is here in our office or anywhere else in the world, we will find the right chiropractor for you.

Can SPECIFIC CHIROPRACTIC help with colic?

Study #1:

The National Health Service in Ballerup (Copenhagen, Denmark) conducted a study involving 50 infants with diagnoses infantile colic. Half of the group was given the drug dimethicon while the other half was given chiropractic care. In this study nine of the 25 taking the drug dropped out of the study because the infants were getting worse. These infants were then not counted in the final results which would have shown a worse result for the drug than published. Even with the removal from the tabulations of the infants who got worst using the drug, the results showed a significant improvement in the group that were under chiropractic care. By days 4 to 7 of the study, the infants remaining in the drug group had reduced their hours of crying by only one hour while the entire chiropractic group had reduced crying hours by an average of 2.4 hours. The results after 8 to 10 day into the study continued to show the drug therapy infants at a one hour improvement while the chiropractic group further improved to 2.7 hours less of crying. The researchers noted that the removal from the study of the infants that got worse from the drug made the results from the drug look better than they actually were.

Study #2:

Probably one of the most frustrating situations new parents find themselves in is having to deal with a child that is suffering from colic. For these parents a recent study conducted in South Africa offers some good news. In a study by Mercer and Cook, thirty infants who had been diagnosed medically with colic were randomly divided into two groups. One group received chiropractic care while the other group did not. All infants in this study were newborn to 8 weeks old and had been diagnosed with colic by a pediatrician. For the purposes of this study, the infants in the chiropractic group received care for a two-week period with a maximum of six adjustments. The results of the study were very impressive. In the group that received chiropractic care, there was complete resolution of symptoms in 93% of the infants within the two-week period. Even more impressive was that in a follow up survey performed one month later, none of the infants had experienced a reoccurrence of problems from colic. The chiropractic care rendered in this study was spinal adjusting.

Study #3:

Case 1: A 6-week-old female infant crying almost continuously since birth, which the mother described as often “violent screaming,” had steadily gotten worse. She slept only 3 hours a night and had 15 minutes of rest 3 or 4 times per day from brief periods of feeding or riding in a car.

Her pediatrician diagnosed the infant with infantile colic, and the mother brought the infant for chiropractic evaluation after a nurse suggested that adjustments might help.

[Diagnosis of] T8 segmental dysfunction was made on the basis of the mother’s statements and observation of the child’s behaviors since entering the clinic. After a single adjustment the child rested for 11 hours during the following 24-hour period and slept for 9 uninterrupted hours during the night. The infant awakened smiling and laughing.

Case 2: A 9-week-old male infant had infantile colic. The mother had been taking Lorazepam T, Paxil T, Zyprexa T, and Wellbutrin T for the first 4 months of her pregnancy until she discovered she was pregnant. At that time she discontinued all medications except Zyprexa, which she continued throughout her pregnancy.

Child was diagnosed with acid reflux as a result of crying day and night; unrelieved by normal parenting behaviors, and Zantac T was prescribed. On entrance to the office 3 weeks later, the parents stated the crying had progressed to about 14 hours per day in spite of these interventions.

After 4 consecutive daily adjustments crying was reduced to 7 hours, uninterrupted sleep increased to 5 hours (from 3 hours before care), and total sleep in a 24-hour period increased to 13 hours (from 5 hours before care).

After 9 adjustments over 2 weeks, the infant was crying an average of only 2 hours per day, was sleeping 5 hours per night and averaging 14 hours of total sleep per day. The baby no longer screamed but smiled and remained awake without crying for long periods and responded appropriately to normal parenting efforts. On subsequent consultation with the pediatrician, all medications were discontinued except Benadryl T as needed. However, the mother occasionally gave the infant Mylicon T on occasion. Colicky behaviors, such as inconsolable crying and clenching of fists, did not return.

Study #4:

In the 12 days of the study, the children under chiropractic care had a 67% reduction in crying while the group treated with drugs had a 38% reduction in crying. The mean number of adjustments given during the two-week study was 3.8.

Study #5:

This is the case of a three-month-old male medically diagnosed with colic and projectile vomiting increasing in severity over the previous two months despite medical intervention. Care consisted of chiropractic spinal adjustments and craniosacral therapy with the resolution of all presenting symptoms within a 2-week treatment period. Proposed cranial and spinal etiologies are discussed as well as the connection between birth trauma and non-spinal symptoms.

Study #6:

This is the case of a 15-day old emaciated male infant experiencing inability to breastfeed and colic since birth.

When he entered the chiropractor’s office, he was crying constantly, “shaking, screaming, rash, and vomiting during and after feeding”. The baby also had “increased distress” 30 minutes after feeding and had excessive abdominal and bowel gas since birth. The mother reported the infant was given a Hepatitis B vaccination within hours after birth. The pediatrician prescribed formula but baby reacted poorly to it.

During the examination the infant continuously cried, with high-pitched screams, and full-body shaking. Child had a distended abdomen with excessive bowel gas.

After the first adjustment (to C1) a significant reduction of crying, screaming and shaking occurred. On the second visit, two days later the mother commented, “This is a completely different baby”. The vomiting before and after feeding had ceased. Another adjustment was given. By the third visit, a “significant decrease of symptoms” was reported and complete remission of abdominal findings. Baby had been successfully breastfeeding since last visit. No adjustment was needed.

The baby had been symptom free for 5 days and received a second Hepatitis B vaccination. All symptoms returned to a severe degree, plus a low grade fever. Adjustment was given but there was no reduction of symptoms. The patient was adjusted three more times over the next week with minimal reduction in symptoms. By the eighth visit, eight days after receiving the vaccination, the child began to show marked improvement and by the 11th visit, no symptoms were noticed and no adjustment was given. Seventeen days after vaccination there was a return of all symptoms; by the 13th visit “the infant did not exhibit any significant recurring symptoms.

Accumulative Constructive Survival Value

Where do you want your health to be in the next 5, 10 or even 20 years? Nowadays so many people have become fixated on the short term, instant gratification that they have lost sight of the big picture. More and more people are focusing on the right now, rather than the what then. These are the drive-thru pharmacy, drive-thru fast food, drive-thru coffee days where you only have to wait 5 minutes for any one of those things. If one feels sick or has an ache or pain, they grab for whatever pill or potion will make them feel better for the moment. If you’re bored, turn on the television or pull out your iphone. So many people make decisions and take actions based on a current event, without looking at the possible consequences. Let me ask you, have you ever known a very happy, healthy and successful pill popping, fast food-eating, 6-hour-a-day television watching person on a constant caffeine high? I know I haven’t. Quick fixes maybe comforting in the moment, but they rarely provide long-term solutions.

I am asking you to think about what you want to be, not in the present moment, but in the future. Let’s take your health as an example. Your health is based on many factors: exercise, diet, rest, thoughts, properly functioning nervous system, etc., but the key thing to understand is your health today is the result of actions you took (or failed to take) in the past.  You may think that how you are today is just a current event, but in reality it is the result of a process. Looking at your health this way can literally be life changing.

This concept of looking at life as a process and not just a single event has been discussed in chiropractic for decades. In chiropractic, there is a concept of “survival values.”  Things that we do each day will have either a positive or negative effect towards our health and function in the future. Positive activities, such as having a proper functioning nervous system, eating nutritious foods, resting, a positive mindset, etc., are known in chiropractic as “constructive survival values.”  On the other hand, negative events like vertebral subluxation (a dysfunctional nervous system), injuries, drugs, toxins, emotional stress, watching too much television, eating fast food, etc., are known as “destructive survival values.”  In this model, your life and health are determined by the accumulation of both constructive and destructive survival values over time. When you look at your health as a process and not merely an event, you begin to realize the importance of constantly and continually striving to add constructive survival values to your life.

Since health is a major aspect of human performance and human performance is in large part regulated by the nervous system, chiropractic plays a key role in your health over time.  By having vertebral subluxations adjusted (spinal misalignments that interfere with nerve function), you allow your body to better express information through the nervous system.  This leads to better performance and better health.  The longer a vertebral subluxation stays corrected, you accumulate a constructive survival value towards your life and will be better for it in the future. For this reason, regular chiropractic care in order to continue to accumulate constructive survival value is crucial.

So where do you want your health to be in the next 5, 10, and 20 years?

At Tree of Life Chiropractic in Redmond, WA we strive to help the community live up to their God given potential. To find out how you and your family can benefit from chiropractic care call our office at 425-968-2262.

Chiropractic Awareness Month!

September 18th marks the 118th year since the first chiropractic adjustment. It all started in Davenport Iowa and is now a worldwide chiropractic movement that is touching the lives of millions every day. As Dr. B.J. Palmer, the developer of chiropractic, said “You never know how far reaching something you may think, say or do today, will affect the lives of countless millions tomorrow.”

The first chiropractic patient was a janitor named Harvey Lillard who had been deaf for years following an injury while lifting something heavy. He also noted that the deafness wasn’t an instant result but a slow progression following the injury. After palpating Harvey Lillard’s spine, D.D. Palmer noted the a bone was misaligned and could have been potentially putting pressure on on the spinal chord. D.D. Palmer then convinced Harvey Lillard to allow him to adjust the vertebra back into its proper position. When Harvey Lillard got up, he stated that he could hear a horse drawn cart down in the street! This was the first thing he had heard clearly in 17 years.

Since that special day, the chiropractic profession has developed into one of the leading healthcare professions in the world. Chiropractic is based on a vitalistic philosophy that recognizes that there is an innate intelligence that uses the brain and nerve system to control and maintain the body in health. Interference to the nerve system can lead to a change in health most easily seen as disease or loss of function. But more than that, this interference can affect performance on multiple levels, some easily observed and others more subtle.

“The nervous system controls and coordinates all of the organs and structures of the human body.” -Grays Anatomy

Fibromyalgia

According to the American College of Rheumatology, fibromyalgia is associated with widespread aching, stiffness, fatigue, and specific tender points that originate in the muscles and soft tissues. Fibromyalgia is closely related to chronic fatigue syndrome with other common conditions such as sleep disturbance, irritable bowel syndrome, tension headaches, and numbness and tingling of the extremities. The medical community states that the cause of fibromyalgia is unkown, although more researchers are looking into a central nervous system dysfunction and cervical spine injuries as being related. There are no blood tests or other diagnostics to objectively assess the condition. The main form of diagnosis currently is based of the patient’s description of widespread chronic pain and finding 11 or more of the 18 tenders points associated with fibromyalgia. The current medical treatment for this disease includes sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, hypnotic agents, antidepressants, corticosteroid injections, psychological evaluations, and the recommendation of physical therapy and exercise.

More recently, many diagnosed with fibromyalgia have found relief by seeing their chiropractor. The chiropractic approach is less intrusive since our focus is to reduce the brainstem’s neurological interference to allow the patient’s body to express a fuller expression of health. There is more and more research and case studies showing the positive affects of a properly functioning nervous system and a reduction of symptoms related to fibromyalgia.

CHIROPRACTIC AND HEADACHES

It has been estimated that each year, 50 million headache sufferers make 50 million office visits to U.S. health care physicians. Headaches result in approximately 150 million workdays being lost each year, with a cost to business of $57 billion annually in lost productivity and medical expenses. It has only been since the 1980’s that the medical profession has begun to recognize the existence of cervicogenic headaches. Chiropractors, however, have been helping patients with headaches for more than 100 years.

How can chiropractic help?

There are two main nerves that emanate from the upper neck and travel up into the head. Between the skull and top bone in your neck (Atlas), the greater occipital nerve travels over the top of the head to just above the eyes. Between the first and second bones of your neck (Atlas and Axis), the lesser occipital nerve travels to the sides of the head. Pressure or stress on this area of the spine can have a tremendous affect on your headaches. By specifically correcting your subluxation when needed, chiropractic can help your own body minimize and eliminate headaches.

Headaches are only a piece of the puzzle.

As headaches negatively affect our lives, the cause of those headaches can potentially be causing greater harm within your body that you aren’t aware of. As we said patients often find that their headaches are relieved or even eliminated by removing their subluxation by a chiropractic adjustment. What patients sometimes don’t realize is that the previous subluxation was also affecting the physiology of their entire body, so by correcting and removing the misalignment causing neurological interference, their entire body began to function at a higher level.

So whether or not you have headaches, Tree of Life Chiropractic (Redmond, WA) encourages everyone to come in and get checked to make sure their body is functioning properly.

BRAIN-NERVOUS SYSTEM-IMMUNE SYSTEM CONNECTION

Dr. Robert Ader, psychologist at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, performed the key experiments to prove the brain-nervous system-immune  system connection. The following summarizes the essential evidence of the connection between the brain, the nervous system, and the immune system.

  • Nerve endings are found in the tissues of the immune system
    • The central nervous system is linked to both the bone marrow and thymus, where immune system cells are produced and developed, and to the spleen and lymph nodes, where those cells are stored.

  • Changes in the central nervous system alter immune responses and triggering an immune response alters central nervous system activity.
    • Researchers have found that inducing an immune response causes nerve cells in the hypothalmus to become more active and the brain cell activity peaks at precisely the same time that levels of antibodies are at their highest. The brain monitors immunological changes closely.

  • Lymphocytes are chemically responsive to hormones and neurotransmitters.
    • Immune system cells have receptor-molecular structures on their surfaces that allow them to receive information from the nervous system and other parts of the immune system.

“The nervous system plays an important role in both the control and activity of the immune response. The sheer power of the brain to affect the body as a whole and general state of health is amazing.”

-Human Anatomy and Physiology (p. 179)

The science of chiropractic is founded on the premise that a properly working nervous system is essential in controlling and regulating bodily function. At Tree of Life Chiropractic, we pride ourselves on being specific in not only adjusting of the spine but being specific about knowing when you need to be adjusted in order for your nervous system to work properly and optimally.

Break the Rules….

Arnold-Schwarzenegger1

I recently listened to a talk Arnold Schwarzenegger did in regards to his 6 rules for success. The one rule that really hit home for me was that in order to accomplish our dreams we have to break the rules a bit. Now he didn’t mean to break the law, but to go against social norms in a sense. Do things that people think you are crazy for doing. This is the only way you can rise up and accomplish the extraordinary.

This idea/concept also fits into improving our health. If we continue to follow our current trends in “health care” we will continue to have increasing medical costs and declining health as a whole. Let’s make a commitment to look outside the box, or TV if you will and start exercising more, eating better, thinking well and lastly giving our bodies the best ability to function optimally from above down and inside out the way God intended it to do.

Tree of Life Chiropractic in Redmond wants to join you on your journey towards health!
