Can Chiropractic Help My Blood Pressure?

We see all kinds of patients in our  Tree of Life Chiropractic – Redmond office. We have seen many patients become healthy enough to get off of their medications. With so many side effects related to taking medication, our objective is to help your body function the way it was meant to and not need to rely on medication or other short term approaches. I had the opportunity to have my research published in a peer reviewed journal with my mentor Dr. Robert Kessinger in 2015.

Feel free to check out the abstract here and/or come into the office and grab yourself a hard copy of the full article.

Improvement in Chronic Hypertension Following a Single Upper Cervical Adjustment: A Case Report
Robert C Kessinger, DC & Carl Moe, DC

(Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research ~ January 19, 2015 ~ Pages 1-5)

Objective:  To report a case presenting with chronic hypertension undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care.

Clinical Features: A 55-year-old male seeking chiropractic care with a 20-25 year history of hypertension. Various medication combinations have been used without success in maintaining normal blood pressure. Radiographs revealed an atlas misalignment anterior and superior with right laterality. History revealed a traumatic side blow cervical spine injury 25-30 years prior to chiropractic visit.

Intervention and Outcome: The patient received upper cervical specific chiropractic care over a seven month period. Thermography performed bilateral in the cervical spine via infra-red technology and leg length inequality were used to analyze progress on a daily visit basis. Radiographic analysis was utilized to determine the characteristics of the upper cervical misalignment present. An upper cervical adjustment was performed according to the KCUCS knee chest protocol. Through the course of 7 months care, the patient received one upper cervical adjustment and the blood pressure progressively lowered.

Conclusion: The findings presented in this case study suggest that an upper cervical chiropractic adjustment may benefit patients who have unresolved chronic hypertension.

The Role of the Chiropractic Adjustment in the Care and Treatment of 332 Children with Otitis Media

One of the most common complaints we hear in the office from moms concerning their children is ear infections and rightfully so. Suspected ear infections or otitis media accounts for over 35% of all pediatrician visits in the United States – that’s approximately 30 million doctor visits a year.

Redmond Chiropractor specializing in Pediatric and Family Chiropractic

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics found a strong correlation between specific chiropractic adjustments and the resolution of ear infections in 332 children with chronic ear infections. Additionally, the study noted that close to 80% of those children did not experience another ear infection within a six month period following their initial adjustments.

How does this work?

From birth, our children are in a constant state of falling, tumbling or simply growing causing stress on their developing spines and nervous systems. This stress causes subluxations, meaning a misalignment to their vertebrae causing interference and additional stress to their ever important nervous system. Subluxations cause havic on our ability to express health. In regards to ear infections, these misalignments can also affect the positioning and function of the eustachian tube, leading to buildup in the middle ear and therefore ear infections.

As a pediatric and family focused chiropractor it is my job and calling to assess and locate those subluxations affecting our nervous systems and remove them through specific chiropractic care in order for your families and children to live healthy lives without the need for drugs or surgery.

How to Get The Most Out of Your Care at Tree of Life Chiropractic

Here at Tree of Life Chiropractic, our mission is to provide Specific Chiropractic care in an environment of love, compassion and clinical expertise. We aim to restore health and help our community members reach their God given potential by helping them raise healthy families free of subluxation. Below are some crucial steps to get the most out of your care while here at Tree of Life Chiropractic.

  1. Follow the schedule of appointments that we have set up for you. There is no substitute for carefully timed chiropractic adjustments.
  2. Avoid physical and mental stress before and after each adjustment. The more relaxed you are the better your adjustment will hold.
  3. Follow faithfully all “home care” instructions for your condition. These may include such things as resting, cold packs, exercise, lifting instructions, etc.
  4. Sleep on your back or on your side, never on your stomach. Ideally, you should have your neck supported while you sleep so your head is in a neutral position. To lessen the stress on your lower back, place a pillow under your knees (while on your back) or between your knees (while on your side).
  5. Sit straight while in a chair, making sure that your lower back is supported. Do not cross your legs except at your ankles. Have children sit straight while playing video games, at school, watching T.V., on the bus or riding in a car and when at the computer.
  6. Lift properly. Bend at the knees while keeping your back straight.
  7. If any body motion causes discomfort, avoid it.
  8. Please do not try to be your own doctor! Self-administered remedies may do more harm than good.
  9. Do your best to maintain a cheerful attitude. Avoid, if you can, stressful situations. Set aside at least one time each day for complete physical and mental relaxation. This is a good lifetime habit for the restoration and maintenance of normal health.
  10. Get enough sleep so your body has the best chance for proper healing.
  11. Don’t be in a hurry. Ligaments and muscles must have time to retrain themselves too support the realigned vertebrae. This is a natural process that can’t be rushed (90 Day Healing Principle).
  12. Please feel free to ask any questions that you have about your health or wellness. We are here to help you understand the best way to take care of your spinal condition.
  13. If there is a change in your condition, for better or worse, please let us know.
  14. During the healing process, proper nutrition is more important than ever. The use of caffeine, nicotine or alcohol should be avoided just prior to an office visit. These substances can alter nerve and muscle activity.
  15. Read all information given to you. This information is meant to help you progress faster in your care and to learn how to take care of your spinal condition more effectively.
  16. Tell Others! There are many people with the same problem that you came here to correct. Our mission is to positively affect our community!

Don’t hesitate to let us know how we can better serve our Redmond community. Make an appointment today!

Help Celebrate Chiropractic’s Birthday!

In 1895 (Sept. 18th) Daniel David Palmer gave the first chiropractic adjustment to Harvey Lillard, who had been partially deaf for 17 years. Soon after Harvey’s hearing was restored. Since that day Chiropractic has been helping millions of people regain their health without the use of drugs or surgery.

Hippocrates (460-357 BC) said “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.”

Help us celebrate chiropractic at Tree of Life Chiropractic Wednesday, September 17th. All day there will be special prizes, raffles, and cake. We will also be providing FREE exams for all new patients. Call Marcie to make an appointment before they fill up!

A New Year – A New You

It’s that time of year again… When everyone is making resolutions, promises of change, and looking to make this year better than the last. People are flooding gyms, starting crazy diets, and making outrageous goals they will never reach. However, Only 8% of people are always successful in achieving their resolutions. 19% achieve their resolutions every other year. 49% have infrequent success. 24% (one in four people) NEVER succeed and have failed on every resolution every year. That means that 3 out of 4 people almost never succeed!

So, instead of running with the next fad diet or exercise programs that are never completed, we want to give you all some simple, yet relevant health principles to follow in order for you and your family to stay healthy this year.

EAT WELL– Eating is simple. If God made it, then you should eat it. If man made it (i.e. it comes in a box or out of a window) stay away from it. We are designed to eat whole, minimally processed foods. Enjoy healthy vegetables, fruits, grass-fed and organic lean meats, nuts/seeds, and lots and lots of WATER!! Stay away from, or limit, items like sugar, dairy, grains, and artificial products that are highly processed. Take time to prepare meals with your family, sit around the table and enjoy some stress-free time together.
MOVE WELL– Movement is LIFE. When organisms stop moving, they start dying. Think of an old car that you haven’t driven for a few years, what happens? The thing dries up and rusts, and won’t run anymore. The same thing happens to the body! Movement brings nutrients and hydration to all the joints of the body, keeping them from drying up and causing pain. Exercise increases blood flow, muscle tone, balance, mental function, heart health and the list goes on. Take the family for a walk, go for a jog, or actually take advantage of the gym membership you haven’t used in a couple months. Just Move!!
THINK WELL– We must think good thoughts, not only about ourselves but about our family, friends, finances, relationships, work and everything else in our lives. Spend time daily reflecting on the many blessings you have. Pray, meditate, read a good book, or take a walk in nature to stay focused on the positive things in life.
A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes. -Ghandi
FUNCTION WELL– Above all, we must make sure that our master control system, our brainstem and spinal cord, are operating at 100%! Your brainstem is the most important organ in your body and if it is functioning at less than it’s full potential, no matter how well you eat, move, or think will matter because your body will not be able to process it fully. Keep yourself and your family checked for subluxation, and make sure you are all RUNNING CLEAR!!

We wish you all an amazing 2014, and we look forward to serving you and your family to our fullest abilities this year.

Here are some things you can start doing now to help stay healthy through the winter season.

1) Wash your hands regularly

2) Get adequate sleep every night

3) Limit toxins and drugs

4) Eat a well balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables

5) Drink water throughout the day

6) Exercise and move daily

7) Sunlight and vitamin D

8) Control emotions and stress levels

9) Get your nervous system checked by a chiropractor

Studies show that regular chiropractic care can increase your immune system function by up to 400%. Call the office today and mention this post to receive a special discounted consultation, exam, and xray (if needed) to see if chiropractic is right for you and your family.

Accumulative Constructive Survival Value

Where do you want your health to be in the next 5, 10 or even 20 years? Nowadays so many people have become fixated on the short term, instant gratification that they have lost sight of the big picture. More and more people are focusing on the right now, rather than the what then. These are the drive-thru pharmacy, drive-thru fast food, drive-thru coffee days where you only have to wait 5 minutes for any one of those things. If one feels sick or has an ache or pain, they grab for whatever pill or potion will make them feel better for the moment. If you’re bored, turn on the television or pull out your iphone. So many people make decisions and take actions based on a current event, without looking at the possible consequences. Let me ask you, have you ever known a very happy, healthy and successful pill popping, fast food-eating, 6-hour-a-day television watching person on a constant caffeine high? I know I haven’t. Quick fixes maybe comforting in the moment, but they rarely provide long-term solutions.

I am asking you to think about what you want to be, not in the present moment, but in the future. Let’s take your health as an example. Your health is based on many factors: exercise, diet, rest, thoughts, properly functioning nervous system, etc., but the key thing to understand is your health today is the result of actions you took (or failed to take) in the past.  You may think that how you are today is just a current event, but in reality it is the result of a process. Looking at your health this way can literally be life changing.

This concept of looking at life as a process and not just a single event has been discussed in chiropractic for decades. In chiropractic, there is a concept of “survival values.”  Things that we do each day will have either a positive or negative effect towards our health and function in the future. Positive activities, such as having a proper functioning nervous system, eating nutritious foods, resting, a positive mindset, etc., are known in chiropractic as “constructive survival values.”  On the other hand, negative events like vertebral subluxation (a dysfunctional nervous system), injuries, drugs, toxins, emotional stress, watching too much television, eating fast food, etc., are known as “destructive survival values.”  In this model, your life and health are determined by the accumulation of both constructive and destructive survival values over time. When you look at your health as a process and not merely an event, you begin to realize the importance of constantly and continually striving to add constructive survival values to your life.

Since health is a major aspect of human performance and human performance is in large part regulated by the nervous system, chiropractic plays a key role in your health over time.  By having vertebral subluxations adjusted (spinal misalignments that interfere with nerve function), you allow your body to better express information through the nervous system.  This leads to better performance and better health.  The longer a vertebral subluxation stays corrected, you accumulate a constructive survival value towards your life and will be better for it in the future. For this reason, regular chiropractic care in order to continue to accumulate constructive survival value is crucial.

So where do you want your health to be in the next 5, 10, and 20 years?

How does chiropractic help women with infertility issues?

You body is an amazing creation that accomplishes miraculous tasks such as creating new life. These miraculous tasks are accomplished under the direction of the nervous system. The nervous system is the master communication system to all the body systems including the reproductive system.

In many cases, fertility issues may be associated with improper nervous system function, poor nutrition, high stress and poor lifestyle habits. Chiropractors are nervous system specialists and reducing interference in the nervous system is the primary goal.  Keeping the spine in alignment, the nervous system clear of interference and other natural modalities such as nutritional counseling, exercise counseling and lifestyle counseling make the chiropractor one of your best options to help your body function the way it was designed to.

At Tree of Life Chiropractic here in Redmond, I specialize in working with women and young children. To learn more about how chiropractic care can help you and your family, check out
